Grand Master Collection
A Grand Master Collection aims to own every variant, edition, and special print of a set. TopVault's completion-mode goals are built for exactly this kind of project. They show your completion percentage, track what you still need, and estimate what it will cost to finish.
This walkthrough uses a Pokémon series as the example, but the same approach works for any collection type.
Step 1: Find the series
- Open the Search tab.
- Make sure Pokémon Cards is selected as your collection type.
- Navigate to the series browser and find the generation and series you want to complete (for example, "1999 Pokémon Fossil").
- Open the series page and review the full item list. Note the editions, groups, and variants listed. This is what a Grand Master Collection includes.
Take your time on this step. Understanding the full scope of the series helps you decide what to include in your goal.
Step 2: Create a completion-mode goal
- Switch to the Goals tab.
- Tap Create goal.
- Name it something recognizable, like "Fossil Grand Master."
- Add a description if you want to track notes about your strategy or priorities.
- Pick a color.
- Toggle "Completion mode?" on.
- Confirm to create the goal.
Step 3: Add the full series to your goal
- Open the goal you just created.
- Use the add controls to search for or browse to the series.
- Add all items from the series as references to the goal.
Alternatively, use the faster multi-select approach:
- Go to the Search tab and navigate to the series page.
- Tap Start multi-select.
- Select all items in the series.
- Tap Goals in the selection bar.
- Choose the goal you created.
This adds every card, product, and variant in the series as references in your goal.
Step 4: Customize what counts
A Grand Master Collection is personal. You get to decide what "complete" means. After adding the full series, review the items in your goal and consider:
- Products: If you only want cards, you can remove product references (boxed sets, ETBs, and so on) from the goal.
- Regional variants: If your Grand Master Collection only covers English prints, you can remove Japanese variants, or vice versa.
- Test prints and promos: Some collectors include these; others focus on the standard print run. Keep or remove them based on your definition.
Remove any references you do not want. Your completion percentage will recalculate based on the remaining items.
Step 5: Associate items you already own
If you already have some items from this series in your collection, associate them with the goal:
- Open the goal detail view.
- Items that match references in your goal can be associated from the goal view.
- As you associate owned collectibles, the completion percentage increases and the estimated cost to complete decreases.
Step 6: Track progress
With the goal populated, you now have a live dashboard for your Grand Master Collection:
- Completion percentage: how close you are to finishing.
- Distinct items collected vs total: the exact count of what you have and what remains.
- Estimated cost to complete: based on current market prices for the items you still need.
- Collection value: the estimated market value of the items you already own.
- TopVault Score: a measure of your collection's quality and rarity.
As you acquire new items and add them to your collection, associate them with this goal to watch the numbers update.
Step 7: Monitor trends
Tap Trends on the Goals tab to see how your Grand Master Collection progresses over time. The trend chart tracks your score, collection value, and item count across Daily, Weekly, and Monthly intervals.
This is especially useful for long-term projects where you want to see your pace of progress and how market values shift as you collect.
Step 8: Compete on the leaderboard
If you want your Grand Master Collection to appear on the Scores and Leaderboards, edit the goal and toggle "Set as ranked goal?" on. Your TopVault Score for this goal will then appear on regional and global leaderboards.
Tips
- Start with the biggest series first if you collect across multiple sets. Completion mode is most useful when there's a clear finish line.
- Check the estimated cost to complete periodically. Market prices change, and knowing the current cost helps you prioritize purchases.
- Use the "Not collected" filter in the goal detail view to focus on what you still need.
- Share your goal with friends using the share link to show off your progress.
